Green Fabrique and Upcirculer workshop – Steminist

VUB

Discover workshops combining textiles and new technologies, reaffirming an often forgotten link. Use textiles to counter the gendered bias of technology and encourage women to discover the sciences, where they are still under-represented. Take part in various textile workshops and dive into exciting fields such as programming, electronics, chemistry and geometry.

  • Activity 1 - Composite biomaterials
Textile waste accounts for a significant proportion of our household waste. Rather than throwing it away, we've decided to shred fabrics beforehand using a shredder at the Green Fabric textile fablab. Then, during the workshop, we will use this fabric confetti to make composite biomaterials using natural, biodegradable ingredients.

  • Activity 2 - Pump up your T-shirt
Turn your T-shirt into a unique and fun work of art with our upcycling workshop! On the programme: create personalised inflatable patches using a vinyl cutter, Inkscape software and a heat press. We'll teach you how to master vector graphics and operate a vinyl cutter using Inkscape, the open source design tool. You'll leave with an inflatable patch ready to stick on your T-shirt, either on site or at home. Stand out from the crowd and proudly display your unique creation.

  • Activity 3 - Textile design using CNC digital tools
In the first part of the workshop, children will learn how to code a design. In the second part, the coded design will be imported into the CNC machine, which will trace the design with a felt-tip pen on the textile.

  • Activity 4 - Textile printing with a DIY gelli plate
In this workshop, we'll be upcycling T-shirts and tote bags using textile printing with a DIY gelli plate (a gelatine plate specially designed for monotype/monoprinting). Participants will discover how to make a recyclable gelli plate from natural ingredients. Then it's time to get artistic, as they use their gelli plate to make unique, personalised textile prints.

  • Activity 7 - Block print and green chemistry
Using wooden stamps created with the fablab's digital tools (CNC, laser cutter), participants can print on fabric dyed with local plants rich in tannins. The patterns will not be printed with traditional ink, but with a natural reagent that causes the colour of the tannin to change through oxidation, creating patterns in black, grey, brown and more. Printing on paper will also be possible, using ink made from plants. A fun, eco-friendly workshop for unique, graphic creations!
